The legalization of marijuana by Canada earlier this year has been great news in the fight for new cannabis legislation around the world. For the rock and bass label, M Ocean, this sounds like the perfect time to release a remix EP of Dubzee’s classic “Everybody Smoke” remix featuring Demolition Man and Trinity Chris.
The original of “Everybody Smoke” is highly remixable, as it combines reggae / ragga beats with a steppy / snare beat. There are four remixes on this EP: a remix in the jungle and a dancehall version of Danny Styles, a remix at halftime by Trimer and another hybrid DnB / jungle from D-Region & Code.
The combination of D-Region & Code seemed quite prime, given that this EP marks the fact that D-Region is Canadian. This remix is probably the closest to the original in terms of structure, but with a little technology or neurofunk flash. technical synths and sentence transitions add to an even sharper and more discreet rhythm than the original, while the lyrics are cut out and transformed into samples for breaks. The duo does nothing to soften the vocals of Demolition Man and Trinity Chris, leaving the verses intact while the rhythm and synths wrap around them. This is an excellent combination combining the best of the jungle and several subgenres of DnB, without however making it overwhelming.
Regardless of the remix chosen, this memorial EP is a fun and dancing way to celebrate the continued advancement of the cause of marijuana. It’s just a matter of whether you feel in the jungle, at the half-time sick, dance in a dancehall or in a D & B atmosphere. Anyone can smoke for “Everyone smokes.”
The EP remix of “Everybody Smoke” will be available tomorrow, Dec. 21 on M Ocean Records. Click here to buy on Bandcamp.
