Project Maybach is Mercedes final Benz’s collaboration with the late fashion superstar Virgil Abloh. It’s a zero-emission solar-powered electric vehicle. The car was unveiled with Abloh’s family’s permission and was regarded as “an exceptional design to come out of Mercedes-Benz.” At Art Basel Miami, the automobile was unveiled. Following on from the G-Wagen race car, this is Abloh’s second cooperation with Mercedes. Every component of the car is reported to have been handcrafted from the ground up.
The majority of the length of Project Maybach comes from its transparent front bonnet, which has solar cells underneath it that power the car’s batteries. The slanted and transparent roofline blends effortlessly into the back end, giving it a spacecraft appearance. It’s a two-seater that’s built for off-road adventures. The car’s interior is almost entirely made of tan leather to match the exterior. The car has a minimalistic feel to it, but it still has room for a cinematic infotainment screen in the center of the dashboard.
The automobile was first mentioned in October, and it was never expected to see the light of day. Abloh and Mercedes’ chief design officer, Gorden Wagener, collaborated on the vehicle’s design.
“The X-Factor nature of Project Maybach results not only from its breathtaking size — almost six meters long — and characteristics, but above all from its unique contrasts,” according to the automaker. “Most notably through how naturally authentic Mercedes-Maybach design elements are harmoniously combined with a new Outdoor Adventure design motif.”
Project Maybach will be on display at Miami’s Rubell Museum from December 1 to 2 as part of Art Basel Miami. Many highlights from this year’s edition include Louis Vuitton‘s “Objects Nomade” collection and Saint Laurent‘s Ephemeral Gallery. Virgil Abloh, the much-loved designer, owner of the streetwear label Off-White, and artistic director of Louis Vuitton’s menswear, died after a two-year struggle with a particularly severe disease. His death was first reported on Sunday and confirmed by his family.
