A "man-free" music festival organized exclusively for women has been found guilty of violations of discrimination laws.
The Swedish Event the Festival of Declarations held in Göteborg last August, was proud to be "the first major world music festival for women, transgender and non-binary ". However, discrimination in Sweden The Ombudsman considered that the very description "without a man" was a "law against discrimination".
When Swedish comedian Emma Knyckare launched the Declaration festival, his intentions were in the right place. The concept of the music festival was to provide a safe space for women, as a result of multiple reports of sexual misconduct at various musical events. But doubling the event as "no man" was apparently going too far.
"It's important to point out what's an offense. These are the statements made before the festival, what they wrote on their website, "said Clas Lundstedt, press officer of the Ombudsman for the fight against discrimination. "We have not yet been able to prove that a person would have been discriminated against in the implementation or that a person would have been rejected."
"We clearly believe that sexual abuse, especially in festivals, is a serious problem. We are therefore eager to try to remedy this, "said Lundstedt. "However, this should not happen in violation of the law, as do their statements in the media and on their website."
